Atlanta Golfers Take Swing to End Poverty
ATLANTA, GEORGIA, SEPTEMBER 22, 2011. On September 19, 2011,120 golfers took a swing at ending global poverty by raising $200,000 in the fifth annual Atlanta Partnership Golf tournament at the Legacy on Lanier Golf Club at Lake Lanier Island, Georgia.
PartnershipsInAction Golf is an initiative of Aga Khan Foundation U.S.A. (AKF USA) to raise awareness and funds that reduce poverty, hunger, illiteracy and poor health in Africa and Asia. One hundred percent of all donations and net proceeds from the tournament go directly to projects supported by AKF USA; not a cent is spent on administration.
The tournament attracted high-level corporate executives, civic leaders and local celebrities. Brian Jordan, Former All-Star Atlanta Braves Outfielder and Atlanta Falcons Safety and Brian Finneran, the Wide Receiver for the Atlanta Falcons joined the other golfers in the tournament.
A benefit gala was held on Saturday, September 17, with 350 people in attendance. At the gala, Brian Jordan gave the keynote speech, saying, “It is so important to give back and make sure that education is the number one focus for children. It is up to us to change their lives and give them hope to be successful. I admire AKF because it is doing what I set out to do with my foundation: to improve the quality of education in the poorest areas in Africa and Asia.”
