New York Golfers Take Swing to End Poverty

NEW YORK, NEW YORK, JULY 26, 2011.  On July 18, 2011, 50 golfers took a swing at ending global poverty by raising $70,000 in the annual New York Partnership Golf tournament at the Manhattan Woods Golf Club in West Nyack, New York.

Randall Kempner, Executive Director of the Aspen Network of Development Entrepreneurs (ANDE), gave the keynote address. He praised AKF USA’s role in creating sustainable development projects by saying that “Ultimately, if we are going to have sustainable prosperity for people in developing countries it’s going to be because they themselves invest their assets and resources in their own prosperity. And it’s going to be because we find a way to unleash the energy and power of entrepreneurship. That is what the Aga Khan Foundation is all about.” Steve Bussell, Director of National Accounts Food Service at Pepsi-Cola, also attended.

New York golfers not only raised money for people in need but also participated in an evening dinner that included a silent auction and awards ceremony. At the auction, golfers outbid one another for items like an iPad 2, Broadway tickets and a hotel and spa package.
