2100 Riverhaven Drive, Suite # 220 (2nd Floor) Highlights2008 HighlightsPartnership Day 2008 opened with the national anthem followed by lively cultural performances including break dancing, Irish folk dances and Latin American and African dances. Participants were able to partake in a variety of entertainment activities throughout the day, such as face-painting, balloon sculpting, henna tattooing and miniature golf. Several leaders from the community attended the event including notable personalities in academia, media and commerce as well as the Mayors of Hoover, Vestavia and Alabaster. Tony Petelos, Mayor of the City of Hoover, proclaimed October 4th, 2008 as the Aga Khan Foundation Day and presented Ms. Anita Parpia of Aga Khan Foundation U.S.A. with the key to the city of Hoover. During the keynote address, the mayor praised the many citizens of Alabama who truly care about building a safer, healthier and more prosperous world saying, “Partnership Day is an example of Americans taking action locally that leads to progress around the globe…. By investing in people and strengthening their capacity to build a better future for themselves, you honor them and respect their dignity.” Addressing the crowd, Charles “Scotty” McCallum, Mayor of the City of Vestavia, expressed pride on being part of such a fantastic initiative and acknowledged the energy and commitment of the youth in attendance. Other notable guests at Partnership Day included Andrew Yeager of National Public Radio (WBHM); Bill Powell, Director of Hoover Area Chamber; Nabeela Alidina, Georgia State Auditor; and several University of Alabama at Birmingham lecturers as well as Hoover City School principals and board members. One of the major highlights of Partnership Day was Village in Action. Visitors of all ages were able to engage in educational activities to experience first-hand the challenges faced by people in the developing countries. Participants could discover see how Aga Khan Foundation, through partnerships with other public and private agencies, creates solutions to overcome low income, poor health conditions and limited educational opportunities. At the “School of Hope” exhibit, participants learned about the Foundation’s Milk and Hope program, which is a partnership with the U.S. Department of Agriculture to provide milk as an incentive for students in isolated regions of Afghanistan and Tajikistan to attend school. The “Building Hope” exhibit highlighted the challenges faced by communities in rural areas by challenging participants to travel through rough terrain, where tires posed as potholes, to transport bricks for construction. Attendees bitten by children dressed as mosquitoes had to rush to the “Reviving Hope” hospital where they learned about life-threatening diseases such as malaria and Foundation programs to prevent their spread. Children at the “Village Well” shared with passersby information about the importance of access to clean drinking water and how many people in other parts of the world lack such a basic necessity. At the “Microfinance Maze”, which also doubled as an Art Gallery showcasing the artwork of Hoover Middle school students, visitors discovered how microfinance can empower people to lift themselves out of poverty. 2007 HighlightsOn October 28, 2007, over 1,500 Hoover-Birmingham area residents gathered in a spirit of thinking globally and acting locally to raise $77,000 in the fight against global poverty. The Honorable Mayor Petelos of Hoover cited Partnership Day 2007 in his presentation in the U.K. at the LivCom Award for Livable Communities. Participants enjoyed a variety of cultural and educational activities throughout the day organized by participating schools and organizations, including the Children’s Dance Foundation, the Alabama Academy of Irish Dance and Nathifa Dance Company.
