Rebecca Gordan, Aga Khan Foundation USA, Program Assistant
Visit Archived Sessions

From August 19 to September 2, 2008, AKF USA Program Assistant Rebecca Gordan traveled to Tajikistan to monitor progress on and prepare for close out of the Education, Dairy and Nutrition Program (EDNP III).

The US Department of Agriculture sponsored EDNP III program since 2004 has been providing a daily supply of vitamin-fortified milk to schoolchildren and teachers in Afghanistan and Tajikistan.  Each year that the program has been operating, approximately 35,000 children and teachers in Tajikistan have received milk with their lunchtime meal.

In addition to providing milk, the EDNP III program has provided funding for various education, health, and rural development projects in Afghanistan, Kazakhstan and Tajikistan.  These projects have included the University of Central Asia’s School of Professional and Continuing Education (SPCE), community and professional health worker trainings, and agricultural and small business support projects.  Under EDNP III, FOCUS in October 2008 began activities to assess and improve the safety of schools in Tajikistan.

This presentation will look at some of the development issues facing Tajikistan and the impact that AKDN projects are having on the lives of beneficiaries.
